Work in Progress

"Untitled" - Katarina
Post your thoughts for this work in progress critique. Kat is looking for some advice on a title. Maybe she will post and let us know what this one is about.

I like how the pattern of the city is repeated in the tape , which draws my eye around . In both of the "cities," I also like the white you added surrounding it . It gives it the effect that it is glowing , which is kind of how I picture a city--chaotic and crazy and always lit up , never sleeping .

I personally like Kat's choice of colors in this work using black to complement the red which like Jackie says gives the work a chaotic atmosphere. The use of the white as well makes the piece more appealing because it furthers shows the city as an illuminated arena. As the color blends my eyes are able to move around the work which is also amplified with the use of texture throughout the work making the piece strong. i think the title should be "city life" or some variation with the word city in it.

I liked working on this art piece. Although I am not sure if it looks done. The texture I used on the sides and top, was using modeling paste and some costume jewlery. I used mostly spray paint on this piece. i also used metalic oil pastels and soft pastel. I used the pastels to brighten up some spots in the piece. Not sure what the title should be, but i want it something that would tell you that there is movement in the city. Working on these piece so far was very fun. Finding out new techniques and designs with the spray paint.

This looks slightly better in this picture than in real life. I think that if you strengthened the left hand side of the piece, it would help the over all composition feel more balanced.

I think what Monica is seeing that while adjusting the lighting in the picture I upped the contrast a bit. You know how I'm always talking about contrast being important.

Kat, can you remind us what your investigation is about?

I think that the best thing about this piece is the texture. Maybe since I have lately been working with a lot of texture I feel much more attrcted to that quality in an art piece but I think the modeling paste acting as a sky is a really stellar idea. Most cities are dirty and crowded and not the cleanest place and I think that Kat captured that aspect very well with her color choice. The choice of a graish-black is very urban-esque and I think her piece embodies what the city is all about. Also having seen the rest of her investigation pieces I also think that it fits very well with the rest of them and the idea of her investigation is carried throughout them very well.

Your investigation deals with the city, right?
Well, the choice of color contrasts really well with each other. The texture also seems to make the piece look like its in motion, like the city is actually alive.
I also really think the adding of white to the top right hand corner, helps the texture to stand out and helps to pull the piece together.
Overall, I like it :]

I agree with Nicole your color choice is excellent becasue the grey value all over the page not only draws your eye around the page it also creates a somber mood. (are you doing just cities or post apocalyptic cities?)The city looks alive yet its after mass destruction. The use of line make it look as if the city is still alive. Your use of line is highly effective.

Although I agree with Roxy on the color choice as a good one because the colors contrast, they are too pale to truly contrast. I think that the overall piece could use a bump up on the black and red, to make the artwork seem more alive.
Nicole is right. Looking back I can see an improvement in the way you use texture. It is strong and using it heavily on the right makes the focal point, the buildings, look stronger.
Where you used tape on the right, the red inbetween the tape marks would be more effective if it were a stronger color, but not strong enough to pull away from the focal point.
I have seen your other pieces, and I think that while it has the same theme, I can see you moving forward as you develop a more unique style.

Yes I think that the spray paint may have dulled the colors some so I would suggest going over the lines aroung the city and upping the red and black some. What more are you planning to add to it?

I think the best quality of this piece is your use of texture. In class, I saw you working on it and I really liked the combination of the modeling paste and costume jewelry. The red and blue spray paint over it gives a “vintage” look.
When looking at it the first thing I think of is pollution. The “glow” around the city is more of a haze, like smog. The jewelry is like litter or contaminants in the air. Your color choice (the blue and red that makes a purple-grayish color) creates a dingy and dirty effect. It seems to portray the wasteful and corrupt nature of the urban lifestyle. Perhaps this different perspective could give you an idea for a title.
It looks good so far but I would create more contrast by making more layers with spray paint.

Personally, I like how the texture in the corner, when connected with Kat's investigation on urban cultures, reminds us that a city is not pretty and clean, but can be full of "sludge" almost. I also agree with Stephanie that the gray or "glow" around the city is smog, furthering the idea that a city is dirty.
However, while I like the colors she has been using, I don't think she has enough contrast. The grays could possibly be lighter, but I think the best way to approach finishing the piece would be to darken the skyline itself, and perhaps the strips of blackish red on the left side.

Consider this part of my first comment.

I forgot to say that in using the jewelry in the textured part in the top left hand corner, and making it disapeer into the "sludge", Kat has made the piece almost symbolize how New York, or any port city, was once prospering and seen as beautiful, but now they are seen as dirty and dangerous places.
